On March 21st at 12 noon, year 1923,
Shri Mataji was born in Chindwara (Central India), which is located on the
longitude of the Tropic of Cancer. Coincidentally the Holy City of Mecca is also on the Topic of Cancer. |
Seeing the beauty of this child who was born
with a spotless brilliance and very bright shining eyes, they called her
Nirmala, which means 'Immaculate’. |
Her family the Shalivahanas were Christian and
of noble decent. They are direct
descendants of the Shalivahana's royal dynasty, which reigned in the Indian
province of Maharashtra from 230 B.C. to 230 years after Christ. |
Shri Mataji passed Her childhood years in the
family house in Nagpur. Nirmala was very happy and was loved by everyone.
Most of the time, She was bursting with childhood energy and inspired Her
playmates of all different ages in drama, songs and dance. Other times, one
might find Her alone in a remote corner of the house, with Her face beaming
with inward joy, lost in meditation. She would even go to school barefoot
in order to feel Mother Earth. |
Shri Mataji’s father, a renowned scholar and
master of 14 languages, was a prominent member of India’s Constituent
Assembly and one of the authors of free India's first Constitution. |

In 1947, subsequent to her studies at the
Christian Medical College in Ludhiana and the Balakram Medical College in
Lahore, Shri Mataji married Sir C.P. Srivastava who was to become one of
India's living legends, knighted by the Queen of England, |
Shri Mataji, has two lovely daughters, Kalpana
and Sadhana. Both are happily married with children. |
In 1961, Shri Mataji launched the ‘Youth Society
for Films’, to propagate purposeful and healthy entertainment with a view
to infuse national, social and moral values in youth. |
She was also a member of the Film Censor Board
where She played an important role in protecting the innocence of the
Indian films during that time. In an article published in the Souvenir, she
wrote – |
After raising two daughters, Shri Mataji began
to devote Her time fully to the spiritual emancipation of humanity. She began contemplating how to give en
mass realisation to seekers of modern time. |
Shri Mataji decided in to study what all these
so-called God men gurus were doing. Completely disgusted, She was shocked
to see them looting people under the guise of spirituality. |
In the early morning on May 5th 1970,
on a lonely beach of Nargol (about 150 km from Mumbai), Shri Mataji out of
shear compassion opened the Sahasrara for Humanity. |
This was the commencement of Sahaja Yoga, the
work She had come to fulfil. |
Sahaja Yoga started with a handful of seekers in
Bombay and Delhi. Friends would
organise small meetings in their homes, where Shri Mataji would give
Self-Realisation, and work tirelessly for hours in establishing the chakras
of the seekers. |

In 1972, Shri Mataji sold Her gold bangles and
with that money set sail for America. She openly exposed all the false
gurus and warned that a deadly disease would result from all the free and
perverted sex which flourished in America, but the Americans were to stupefied
by their new found freedom to pay any heed. A few years later AIDS broke
out in America. |
In great anguish at the plight of America, on
board a ship to India, Her heart pining to save Her children, She wrote: |
In 1974, Shri Mataji’s husband was unanimously
elected as the Secretary General to the International Maritime
Organisation. She set up a house in London England, and supported her
husband’s hectic diplomatic life. |
Every year Shri Mataji would return for a few
months and work in the villages of Maharashtra. Her heart was with the Indian masses and the next fifteen
years of Her work were confined mostly to villages. |
The land of Maharashtra was greatly blessed by
Saints. The people are poor but
their spirit is rich and they instantly responded to vibrations. Starting
from Rahuri to Pune, village after village got en mass realization. |
She made everyone stand barefoot on the ground,
and whilst vibrating the Earth, She prayed to Mother Earth to absorb their
problems; People started to feel relief from their problems, and they felt
a cool breeze in their hands. In
Bombay a man brought his son who was a drug addict, Shri Mataji gave him
self realisation and he never craved hashish again. An alcoholic was
brought to the program by his desperate wife, and he stopped drinking
overnight. One man who suffered from arthritis was walking away a half hour
later. The blind began to see and the deaf could hear. The stories of Her
miracles spread world wide and Sahaja Yoga took root in South America,
Australia, New Zealand, Africa, North America, Turkey and the Far East. |
During the 1980’s, Shri Mataji tirelessly
traveled the world many times, giving thousands of public programs, and
conferences offering men, women and children of every race, religion and
tradition, the priceless gift of Self Realization. |
In 1986, Shri Mataji was declared “Personality |
of the Year” by the Italian government. |
Within the next four years Sahaja Yoga spread
like wild fire. In the cities of
Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tegliati and Kiev itself, where there are over a
hundred thousand Yogis. Her
programs were held in gigantic sport stadium, which were jam-packed with
thirty thousand people. |
At a medical conference in Moscow there were six
hundred doctors. As She started to speak they requested to have Self
Realisation first. |
However the President of the Academy remarked
that Einstein worked with dead matter whereas the work of Shri Mataji is
far greater, as Her work brings peace to mankind. |
In the history of this institution, one of the
oldest academies in the world, only 12 people have ever been granted this
honor. |
In 1994 France granted official recognition to
Sahaja Yoga as a religion. During Her visit to Brasilia in 1994, the Mayor
received Her at the air-craft and presented Her the keys to the city.
Ecoforum in Bulgaria awarded Her with a Gold Metal in August 1995 and the
same year the Romanian University conferred upon Her a doctorate in
Cognitive Science. |

where her teachings have spread and become established across a wide range
of cultures, races and social levels. Her public appearances at the Royal
Albert Hall, London, have become an annual event since 1993. She currently
resides in northern Italy which has become the home of monthly
International Sahaja Yoga seminars attended by thousands since 1991. |
In 1997, separate tributes were paid to Shri
Mataji by Claes Nobel (Chairman of United Earth and grandnephew of Alfred
Nobel, creator of the Nobel Foundation), and Ayatollah Rouhani (leader of
the Shiia Muslim faith in Europe) at the Royal Albert Hall in London. |

During the 105th Congress in 1997, Congressman
Eliot Engle read an honorarium for the Congressional Record commending Shri
Mataji for her dedicated and tireless work for the emancipation of
humanity. |
In order to express their gratitude for her
selfless humanitarian work, the mayors of several major cities in America
have proclaimed special days as “Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi Day” in her
honor: Cincinnati, OH (September 10th, 1992), Philadelphia, PA (October
15th, 1993), Yonkers, NY (September 26th, 1994). The city of Berkeley, CA
has proclaimed a Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi Day on June 18th. This day is
also known as Juneteenth Day and is celebrated by the African Americans as
the day on which they received the news that Abraham Lincoln had freed the
slaves. |

The National Institutes of Health in Washington
D.C. hosted on June 19th, 2000 a conference on Sahaja Yoga and
Health which was attended by 550 medical professionals. |
Shri Mataji spoke to a rapt audience about the ‘Secret
of Medicine’. She said that modern medicine addresses only the left and
right sympathetic nervous system which correspond to the left and right
channels of energy, while Sahaja Yoga opens the way for ‘Meta-Medicine’
which for the first time is concerned with the parasympathetic nervous
system (the central energy channel, through which the Kundalini energy is
activated). This is an actualization which has been proved in Sahaja Yoga. |

To this day, Shri Mataji tours the world to
share her discovery in a most compassionate way, never accepting payment of
any kind. In the United States, thousands come to her free lectures every
year, while in countries like India and Russia, her programs which are held
in huge stadiums or public parks draw crowds of up to 100,000 people. Shri
Mataji has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize. |

Several million people have received their Self
Realisation world wide. Hundreds of thousands have practice Sahaja Yoga
daily in their lives. At present, Sahaja Yoga classes are held weekly for
free in about 100 countries. On March 21st 2003, over twelve
thousand people from all over the world gathered to celebrate Her 80th
birthday. |
In addition to founding Sahaja Yoga meditation,
Shri Mataji has distinguished herself as a great humanitarian by creating a
number of non-governmental organizations, including: |
A Vocational Training school in Vaitarna, India
for disadvantaged students |
Now the Vaitarna Music and Dance Academy, near
Mumbai and Nashik commenced its first academy course on 1st January, 2003.
Previously the international academy of the arts in Nagpur, India. |

which offer stunningly deep insights on the crises of our modern times and
the solutions to their root problems. |
She has also delivered thousands of lectures,
given many television and radio interviews, and been the subject of
hundreds of newspaper articles around the world |
SHRI MATAJI NIRMALA DEVI |
EMITS TREMENDOUS SUBTLE (INVISIBLE)
VIBRATIONS.
HOWEVER THE VIBRATIONS COULD BE RECORDED ON PHOTOGRAPHS |
BY USING ANY PHOTO CAMERA AND STANDARD FILMS |
These two photographs were taken seconds one
after the other. The camera
recorded the vibrations (which are invisible to the eyes) emitting from a
framed photograph of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi. |
Simply by sitting calmly in front of a picture
of Shri Mataji and holding the hands out with palms upwards, it is possible
to feel these vibrations as a cool or hot breeze, or even a tingling
sensation in your hands and fingers.
One has to have their Kundalini awakened (their Self Realisation) to
experience this. |
“I knew about myself since I was born. I have done nothing special. If I have
done anything special it is to understand human beings, what’s their
problem. They followed Christ, they
followed Mohammed Saheb, they followed Shri Krishna, but nothing penetrated
inside. Why? – because they were
not connected to the all pervading power.
Then only what I have done is to work out the permutations and
combinations of human beings.
That’s not difficult because they are mainly seven chakras that one
has to work out and how you can raise the kundalini to break the sahasrara.
It has worked and its working out in thousands.” |
